"Power and Water"
Los Angeles, CA
The Department of Water and Power (DWP) building is a 17-story architectural marvel located in Bunker Hill, Los Angeles. Designed by Albert C. Martin and Associates and completed in 1965, it exemplifies the sleek, modernist aesthetic of the International style. One of the most striking features of the building is its expansive reflecting pool, which spans 1.5 acres (6,000 m²) and is surrounded by elegant fountains that create a mesmerizing display. At night, the pool becomes a shimmering mirror, beautifully reflecting the illuminated building and offering an incredible view of Downtown Los Angeles. This black-and-white photograph “Power and Water” captures the building’s commanding presence against the cityscape. The monochrome palette enhances the contrast between the smooth, glassy water and the geometric lines of the structure, emphasizing the interplay of light and shadow that brings the scene to life after dark.
